Charlottesville/Albemarle SPCA pet advice

The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is encouraging people to take special precautions to protect their pets during the summer months, with the following Summer Safety Tips:

· ·          Provide your animals with plenty of water, shade, and proper ventilation at all times or they can end up with heat stress or stroke, and possibly die.
·          Never leave your pet in the car even for a few minutes. The temperature in your car can rise over 100 degrees in a manner of minutes. Animals that are older, very young, overweight, or have heart and respiratory conditions are more likely to have problems from the heat.
·          Change the water for your pets more frequently, as theheat can breed bacteria, which can sicken your pet if you’ve left it out in the sun too long.
·          Do not overdo it with exercise in the heat. Keep walks to a gentle pace. If your pet is panting a lot or seems exhausted, it's time to stop.
·          Protect your pets from fleas and ticks with a good control product.
·          Watch for signs of heatstroke. Dogs can develop heatstroke fairly quickly. Signs of this are excessive panting, staring, anxious expression on the face, warm skin, refusal to obey commands by owner, vomiting, collapse and rapid heartbeat. If you suspect that your pet is suffering from this, lower the animal's body temperature by applying towels soaked in cool water to the hairless areas of the body and take your pet to the vet immediately.
·          If your pets are staying home when you vacation, properly instruct your pet-sitter and, if appropriate, your neighbors. If you are having someone come to your home to care for your pets, provide your pet-sitter with all vaccination and medical records. If an emergency occurs or your pet gets lost, medical history records are very important. Also inform your sitter that should your pet go missing, they should immediately contact the local SPCA or animal shelter to see if your pet has been found and, if not, to file a lost report.   If appropriate you may want to inform your neighbors that someone will be caring for your pets. In AlbemarleCounty, animal control officers have received an increased number of calls about pets being left without care, only to find out that the pets are being cared for by pet-sitters while the owner is out of town.

The mission of the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the lost, abandoned, and homeless animals of the City of Charlottesville and the County of Albemarle and to increase the number of these animals being placed in appropriate, loving, and permanent homes through adoptions, foster care, and outreach, and to set a standard of excellence and leadership in shelter animal care, humane education, and progressive animal welfare programs. Charlottesville/Albemarle SPCA Critter Ball

Growing SPCA Event Hosts Charlottesville’s Best "Star" Dancers.
 The "Critter Ball" Returns with a Bit of Beatles Love.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA: Following last year's biggest event in Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA history, the "Critter Ball" returns to Charlottesville next month to raise important funds to support our No-Kill mission. This year, the Board of Directors and staff are pleased to announce a unique change of venue and a strong lineup of celebrity dancers for the signature event that follows. On Saturday, September 25th beginning at 6:30pm at the expansive Smith/Worrell Hanger at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Airport, the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA is once again putting the fun back into "fundraiser" with its Beatles themed “All You Need is Love Critter Ball” featuring the popular “Dancing with Charlottesville's Stars” competition.

This year an expanded lineup of seven local Charlottesville leaders have agreed to donate their time and talents by pairing up with professional dancers from Terry Dean's Dance Studio to compete for the community's donation votes for this great cause. Here's the evening's Star lineup:

* Director of Marketing and PR for JW Sieg Wines, Ashley Sieg Williams;
* CBS19 Chief Meteorologist, Travis Koshko;
* Critter Ball Co-Chair and community leader, Scheline Crutchfield;
* Artist, community leader and long-time friend of the SPCA, Ethel DeNeveu;
* Architect and Developer, Keith Woodard;
* Tennis professional and head of Boar's Head Tennis, JacekWolicki;
* President of System 13 technology, Preston Morris, Jr.

The Critter Ball Committee reminds supporters that if you cannot attend the event, you can still support the SPCA by going to the event website: www.SPCACritterBall.com, and voting for your favorite Charlottesville dancer and their animal mascot. All of the dancers are asking the community for their help and support for the No Kill mission of the SPCA.

"This is what I imagine they mean by ‘putting your best foot forward.’ I am honored to be able to participate this year in a cause that I feel the whole community can embrace. I am committed to making sure that my dancing rises to the occasion," states Ethel DeNeveu, who is now spending much of her week training for the event at the Terry Dean Dance Studio. Scheline Crutchfield lends her organizational and motivational talents to this year's event as Co-Chair of the Critter Ball Committee. She commented on this year's unique venue at the airport. "I am so excited about this year's Beatles theme and to be able to transform the hanger. The airport has been terrific to work with and I know that our guests will be overwhelmed by what we have planned." The SPCA graciously thanks our returning presenting sponsor BMW of Charlottesville, and proudly welcomes Virginia National Bank, as both a presenting sponsor and dance contest sponsor. The Critter Beatles Ball will begin at 6:30 p.m. and features a cocktail reception and silent auction, dinner and live auction and the main event, the “Dancing with Charlottesville Stars” competition. Individual tickets are $250 per person.

For more information on reserving a table or tickets and sponsorship opportunities, please contact Mike Alexander at (434) 964-3331 or email community@caspca.org.

Comment on State's Bicycle Plan

Bike Charlottesville, a local bicycle advocacy coalition, is encouraging all Central Virginians to
review and comment on the new draft State Bicycle Plan that has just been unveiled for public input by the Virginia
Department of Transportation.
The draft plan is available online at
http://www.virginiadot.org/programs/bicycling_and_walking/bicycle_policy_plan.asp. Public comment on the plan
will be accepted through September 17, 2010 via email to vabiking@vdot.virginia.gov.
“This is an important opportunity and a critical time period for all who are interested in bicycling as transportation,
recreation, or sport,” says Heather Higgins, spokeswoman for Bike Charlottesville. “Once adopted, VDOT’s State
Bicycle Plan will direct the future course of bicycling in Virginia for years to come. It is crucial that the public weigh
in now with their suggestions for integrating cyclists into Virginia’s multimodal transportation system so that
bicycling is safer and more enjoyable throughout the entire Commonwealth.”
Earlier this month, Bike Charlottesville released the results of a community survey, “Bike Ballot,” on bicycling
conditions and needs in Central Virginia. This data, available through Bike Charlottesville’s Facebook page
(http://bit.ly/b1iVGF) should provide helpful information to anyone reviewing and commenting on the draft State
Bicycle Plan.
Notable priority requests from the greater Charlottesville area public include:
• expanding bike facilities (bike lanes, bike corridors through high traffic areas, rail trails and other forms of
bike trails) to support cycling for transportation and recreation,
• motorist education regarding safely sharing the roads and cyclists’ and drivers’ rights and responsibilities,
offered in the form of expanded curriculum for driver’s education classes, DMV driver’s manual, and the
DMV driver’s license tests,
• education of law enforcement officers regarding motorists’ and cyclists’ rights and responsibilities and
proper incident reporting techniques for traffic accidents involving cyclists,
• statewide, interactive, online, GPS map resource for reporting and sharing bike commuter /
transportation routes, areas not safe for cycling, and bike accident incidents, and last but not least
• legislative reform, specifically adoption of the yield and stop sign treatments championed by the State of
Idaho, a 3 foot passing zone, and the creation of a careless driving law.
